While the AlloDerm gum grafting is generally straightforward, many people are not familiar with how it works or what it involves. When you visit our Sault Ste Marie dental practice for an AlloDerm gum graft consultation, we’ll be able to answer all of your questions in full detail. In the meantime, Dr. Carlo Biasucci, Dr. Nathan Haas and the entire team here would like to answer some of the most common questions we receive from patients about AlloDerm.

What is AlloDerm gum grafting?

AlloDerm gum grafting refers to a way of rebuilding gum tissue when the roots of the teeth are exposed following gum recession.

How does it differ from traditional gum grafting techniques?

Traditional gum grafting uses donor tissue from a patient’s palate. AlloDerm gum grafting uses a specially treated acellular donor tissue matrix, which means no soft tissue needs to be taken from the roof of a patient’s mouth during treatment.

What gum problems can AlloDerm treat?

AlloDerm is ideal for addressing issues with gum recession, whether it’s caused by aggressive tooth brushing, gum defects or gum disease. When you visit our practice serving Sault Ste Marie for an AlloDerm gum grafting consultation, we’ll discuss all options to repair your gum recession.

What is gum recession?

Gum recession refers to the process in which the gums pull away and downwards from where they naturally attach the teeth, revealing the root structure. This can lead to tooth sensitivity, tooth root decay and possibly even irritation with the nerve of the tooth. Left untreated gum recession can progress and tooth loss may occur.

What is gum disease?

Gum disease refers to a bacterial infection of the gums. In its earliest stages, it’s called gingivitis, though it can progress to a more serious condition known as periodontitis. Gum recession is one of the many symptoms of gum disease, as well as bleeding gums, inflammation and redness of gums, bad breath, and acute sensitivity of the gums.

How are AlloDerm gum grafts placed?

Dr.Biasucci and Dr.Haas use a pouch technique to repair gum recession. The pouch techniques uses no cuts on the gum tissue but uses a laprascopic approach to work underneath the gums. Patients are given local anesthetic for comfort during treatment. The doctor will then create a small pouch under the gums and introduce the AlloDerm tissue into it.  The AlloDerm tissue is stitched in place and your own gum tissue is then stitched as well. In the weeks following the AlloDerm procedure, you need to follow our instructions for post-grafting care to ensure as few complications as possible.

Who are the best candidates for AlloDerm gum grafting?

Ideal candidates for AlloDerm gum grafting are people who are dealing with gum recession and are in otherwise good health.  During your AlloDerm gum grafting consultation at our Sault Ste Marie dental practice, Northern Dental Care can discuss these matters in greater detail.
